Salutation to the Divine Poet
 by Churaumanie Bissundyal

Your feet shall be my pen, O Master,

and your robe, my ink.

Your footsteps on the grass shall be my prayer,

the stones that bruise your feet,

my strength against the shrewd and vile.

Walk on the grass
that the little blades may kiss your feet with joy.
Walk on the stones
that the sharp edges may test the fibre of your soles,
for both grass and stones are ways of life:
little blades of love, sharp edges of the world.

Then, grace the sojourn of my pen,
that I may bathe the stones with milk
and water the grass that it may grow,
for the scorpion ceases not to sting,
the flower ceases not with scent and colour.

Let the breath of the wind be the rhythm of my song,
the sweet cry of the birds, my persistence to write,
for the wind is a servant of your silence,
the birds, the children of your love.

Let the rays of the sun be my phrases and imageries
and the ebb and flow of the ocean, my mood, tone and style,
for the sun is your brighter eye of learning,
and the ocean, the figures of your vision.

I care not,
whether the clouds stifle me with their shawls of darkness,
yet I will borrow jewels from the moon and stars
and make them ornaments of my song,
for the things of the sky
are the abundance of your cosmic perfection
and I, the little heir, am the inheritor of your love.

Let the Muse come to me in her apparel of sunlit dawn,
bejewelled with the silver amber of the ocean’s waves;
let her come to me in a festival of raindrops
and sprinkle pearls of life on the gratitude of green leaves.
Let her hum the melody of your silence
as the bees begin their task, caressing flowers for nectar.

Take the petals of the oleanders,
String hard thoughts into garlands of simple feelings
that I may perceive the deeper side of life,
your silence urging my lines to perfection.
